Oxford Literary Festival Appearance

I did a signing at th Oxford Literary Festival last saturday, and they asked me to do a drawing for their Big Frieze, which is going to be displayed in a school. I drew a big picture of Chitty in her VW camper guise, and Charlotte took some pictures.

It's difficult drawing standing up. That's the beginnings of a grimace . . .

My old accountant had a very dramatic inner life. He would refuse to speak about money on the phone, and seemed convinced that he was under surveillance by 'the man', despite being a perfectly ordinary high street bean-counter.

Outwardly soft-spoken and neat, he clearly thought of himself as being more like the shady 70s lawyer played by Sean Penn in Carlito's Way.

I was describing him to a friend this morning, and drew this guy. He's not my ex-accountant, but is, I think, pretty close to how he sees himself.

"Did I pull you out of a thirty year stint in five years? No, I filed your tax return. But I would have. If you'd, you know, asked me. Anyway listen, we shouldn't talk about this stuff on the phone, you know what I'm saying?"

I'm illustrating the first of three sequels to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, to be published by Macmillan this November. It's a huge thrill, and I've had to keep it under my hat until today, when the official announcement has been made. The first book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again, is completely fantastic, and I'm hugely honoured to have been invited to help bring it to life.
